What was the last thing you learnt from one of your team members?
What was the last thing you learnt from one of your team members?
I was reading something the other day that highlighted the power of a teacher offering as much respect to their students as they expect for themselves - the opposite way that our society sets up the teacher-student relationship.
I was contemplating this for our roles as CEOs, Founders, Owners or Executives with teams, and think it is totally relevant.
Imagine if you could elevate the humility muscle inside you to TRULY believe that EVERY team member you have, can teach you something. Not just once, but on an ongoing basis...
It doesn't mean they will be able to krank out a new strategy for you, restructure the finances or company structure for you, deal with strategic partners as you can or might, nor is it about what their area of expertise is. It may simply be the way they go about a task, the way they research something, the questions they ask, their attitude in handling pressure, their alternate perspective. It could be anything!
My "go to" book, Multipliers by Liz Wiseman has a number of principles. One of them is that a Multiplier Leader totally believes that they are NOT the smartest person in the room, and that the best answers will come from outside themselves.
So here's a challenge for you...
At the end of the week, spend 5 minutes to reflect on what is one thing you learnt from each of your team members. If you're super keen, there may be some significant others that you may try to apply this to as well. I have been thinking about this with some coaches I connect with, my wife, and my 4 children too!
As you know, every session we have (monthly CEO 1 on 1 or Leadership Team Quarterly), I ALWAYS have a tonne of learnings. I see trusted advisors and world class coaches doing similar things. It's part of me striving to be the best I can be to support you in becoming the leader you aspire to be, and for your business to become that incredible company we envision of and plan for.
Give this a try. Not only will you learn tonnes, it will multiply the capability of your people, build the cohesion of your team, and inspire your people to offer more! Imagine if they apply this to their team too!!
Have a great rest of week.
Grow well
